When we sought out to create ZONES Math, the driving force was our love of balanced literacy and workshop models such as the Daily 5. These models worked well creating flow in our classrooms and boosted student achievement. Bottom line was we loved how they fostered independence and propelled students to take charge of their own learning in a variety of ways. Contemplating how we could bring that same balance to math is when ZONES was born (a lake house and some fruity drinks may also have been a contributing factor #cheers).
The last few years has been a flurry of activity both within our classrooms and across the internet as we share this new balanced approach to teaching math we call.... ZONES Math.
ZONES Math is saving students and math classes everywhere with a workshop model approach to teaching and learning. When launched, students are taught procedures and routines to be used at specific targeted zones (much like the a balanced literacy such as Daily 5 model). The framework includes 5 targeted ZONES for student interaction:
