I was privileged to attend MACUL 2015 in Detroit a week ago. I came back brimming with ideas to use in the classroom and, specifically, with ZONES math. My district has very minimal technology, and I have made ZONES math work in a way that utilizes only 5 computers. My students and I still love it, without all the advantages of technology. All of this is about to change due to a bond our district passed. My classroom is about to go 1:1 with iPads!
One of the important things I took from MACUL is that technology in the classroom should allow teachers to work smarter, not harder. Would you believe one of the amazing ways I found to work smarter was with formative assessments, and it was actually fun and easy!?
Let me introduce you to Formative. www.goformative.com
It is a new website, not an app, so it is available on any device your students have available to them. Let me break down the amazing features of it for you. . .
The possibilities that this website offers are absolutely boundless. In 3 weeks, when I receive my iPads, my first plan is use Formative for my formative assessments at the beginning and/or end of a lesson. Currently, I pass out paper entrance/exit tickets, which I then grade and pile and try to keep track of. This works, but am I working smarter? I don't think so.
Formative will allow me to see, live, which students have mastered a concept and who needs additional support. It will allow me to watch my students as they answer an independent problem, and understand their thinking and possible misconceptions. I can then give my students immediate feedback on their learning. The data I have at my finger tips will allow me to group students for the following day, according to their needs. To me, this is working smarter. I have a feeling this is going to be just one of many ways Formative becomes indispensable in ZONES math for me.
We're glad you're here!
